Waste Exports and Imports

Did you know that exporting waste for disposal is illegal unless there is no viable option in the UK? If you export waste, are you sure of where it is going?

We’ve all seen the media images of plastics and other wastes strewn on tropical beaches.  In 2007 laws governing the import and export of waste were strengthened to try and stop this from happening and now extensive documentation is needed to ensure that everyone involved in the transfrontier shipment of waste knows exactly what waste is being moved, where it has come from, where it is going and what is going to happen to it when it gets there.

These rules apply slightly differently in different countries, so if you are sending waste from the UK to Romania for reuse, crossing through France, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary to get there, you might need permission from multiple authorities and documentation in several different languages.

Similarly, if you are moving waste into the UK from another country, there are a number of steps that you must take to ensure that you stay within the law. Each journey may require different documentation, based on the particular make up of the consignment, for example, or the route being taken by the waste.

We can give you cost-effective advice to ensure that you get transfrontier shipments right every time.
